Reintroductions

The fire-bellied toad has lost the majority of its original distribution in Lower Saxony in the last decades. The aim of the project LIFE Floodplain Amphibians is to restore its original distribution. Within the project, suitable habitats will be restored.

The fire-bellied toads cannot bridge the required distances by themselves. For this reason, reintroductions are required.

We will take spawn from existing, genetically suitable populations. These will be grown under human supervision and care. Young toads will be released into the wild. The reintroductions will meet the strict requirements and criteria of the IUCN.

Small population with only a few individuals are at threat of extinction despite efforts to optimise their habitat. Such populations will be strengthened by supportive breeding. All raised young toads will be released where the spawn had been taken.
